A Guide to Step-by-step Car Painting
Stained body or peeling paint can strip the car’s exterior of its beauty, create abrasion and corrosion on the exterior — and worst of all, it can lead to gradual structural damage. Although it is best to leave it to professional car painting services to paint your car, you can paint it yourself as well if you have the right tools and equipment and know the step-by-step car painting process and techniques.
Below, we lay out a step-by-step guide on how to paint a car.
Tools Required for Car Painting
Before starting, it is essential to ensure that you have all the car painting tools and equipment.
The list of tools you will need to paint your car is as follows:
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Degreaser
- Masking tape
- Primer
- Polyester putty
- Spray/Brush/Roller
- Paint (acrylic urethane car paint is recommended)
Step-by-step Car Painting Process
Step 1
- Before you start repainting, you must first choose an appropriate place. Ensure that the place for car paint correction is adequately ventilated and well lit, and that there is enough room. Avoid garages because the furnaces in the garage might catch fire if they come in contact with paint fumes.
Step 2
- Cover the mirrors, door handles and other areas of your car that you don’t want painted with masking tape and a sheet of paper.
Step 3
- Read the safety guidelines and cautions on any product carefully because many are highly flammable and could even cause respiratory irritation.
Step 4
- Wipe off the dust and sand thoroughly but gently in circular motion. Scrape off the old paint and level the rough surface with a fine-grit sandpaper. If there are any dents on the car’s body, fill them with polyester putty. For better results, use a sanding block if possible to hold the sandpaper for sanding.
Step 5
- Put on the primer. Before you start spraying, ensure your primer has been appropriately thinned and mixed. Keep the sprayer’s nozzle 6–8 inches away from the surface. Slowly put on the primer back and forth over the area you’re painting.
Step 6
- Before applying a second coat of the primer, let it dry completely and sand the areas where the surface is uneven. Generally, it takes between 1 to 4 hours for the primer to dry. The amount of time it takes for the primer to dry varies on the type of primer and the surface you’re painting on. It is recommended to put on two coats of primer so that there is no spot on the surface that is not covered.
Step 7
- Spray the paint using a sprayer. You can use a brush or roller but painting with a spray is easier and faster. A minimum of two coats should be applied and the second coat should be applied after the first one has dried completely.
How to Protect Car Paint from Scratches
Once you have painted your car, you now have to protect car paint from damage to maintain the beauty of your car’s exterior. Try to park your car in the shade as ultra violet rays of the sun can crack the car’s paintwork. Secondly, wash your car regularly to remove dirt and dust that can damage your car’s paintwork. In addition to this, applying layers of wax on the car’s exterior also helps maintain the car’s paint and protect it from peeling off.
