A vehicle dashboard is a combination of various crucial components. It serves as the primary interface between the driver and the car’s essential functions. A car dashboard houses critical instruments such as the speedometer, RPM, fuel gauge and check engine light, among other indicators. The driver should ensure that all dashboard indicators are functioning correctly for the vehicle’s safety and efficiency. However, problems like car dash lights flickering should concern motorists. Ignoring such visible signs of trouble can only intensify the problem. Let’s learn about some common car dashboard lights flickering reasons and their fixes to timely diagnose and address associated issues.
Car Dash Lights Flickering: Causes and Fixes
A driver must be aware of every car dashboard warning light to ensure an optimal and safe driving experience. However, a car dashboard flickering lights issue can be concerning. Here are some of its common causes.
Faulty Alternator
Alternators in cars generate electricity to power the vehicle’s electrical systems and recharge the battery. If the alternator begins to fail, it starts struggling to supply constant power. As a result, it causes dashboard lights to flicker as the voltage fluctuates. Headlights and dash lights flickering while driving are among the evident signs whether it is a bad car battery or an alternator.
How to Fix It
To address this issue, the alternator should be tested using a voltmeter to measure its output. An optimally running alternator typically produces between 13.5 and 14.5 volts while the engine is on. If the reading is outside this range, the alternator may need to be repaired or replaced. Getting rid of a faulty alternator is also how to deal with a dead vehicle battery and frequent power loss.
Weak or Dying Battery
Another evident reason behind car dashboard lights blinking is the weak or dying car battery. Lacking sufficient power, a weak battery may not hold a sufficient charge, which causes a voltage drop. As a result, dashboard lights start to flicker. In such a situation, flickering takes place during engine start-up or when additional electrical loads are placed on the system.
How to Fix It
The battery should be tested with a multimeter to check its voltage. A fully charged battery typically shows a voltage reading of around 12.6 volts with the ignition is off. If the voltage is significantly lower, the battery may need to be recharged or replaced. Regular car battery maintenance is crucial. For instance, check corrosion on battery terminals and ensure tight connections to prevent unnecessary power discharge.
Loose Connections
Loose or corroded connections within the vehicle’s electrical system can interrupt the flow of electricity. Such a problem leads to intermittent power delivery. This results in dash lights flickering when trying to start the car as the electrical connection is made and lost.
How to Fix It
Inspect the vehicle’s electrical system for any loose, frayed or corroded wires. Check car relays and electrical connections, especially around the battery terminals, fuse box and alternator. Cleaning corrosion with a wire brush and tightening any loose connections can often resolve the issue. In some cases, replacing damaged wiring may be necessary to restore consistent electrical performance.
Bad Engine Ground Strap
An engine ground strap, also known as a negative battery cable, serves as the foundation for the vehicle’s entire electrical system. If there are symptoms of a bad engine ground strap or there’s a poor ground connection, it causes voltage fluctuations. As a result, you may face problems like a car not starting or dash lights flickering.
How to Fix It
To fix this issue, locate the grounding points in the vehicle, which are typically connected to the chassis. Check for loose bolts, rust or signs of corrosion at these points. Clean any corrosion and tighten the connections. If necessary, replace the grounding cables to ensure a stable electrical system. This is a solution for the problem of dashboard lights flicker when starting car.
