Make Matters: Cadillac Logo History and Meaning
The history of the Cadillac logo dates back to 1902 when the company was launched after the name of the founder Antoine De La Mothe Cadillac. Since then, the Cadillac car logo has undergone several changes to cater to the auto manufacturer’s vision, branding and ownership changes. Also, some of the aesthetic changes in the Cadillac logos over the years were very significant to the brand compared to others.
Today we are going to discuss the Cadillac logo history and the meaning behind it. Without further ado, let’s unfold.
CADILLAC LOGO HISTORY
Cadillac is one of the well-known American car brands, manufacturing vehicles for more than 100 years. Today, the brand operates under GMC. The brand was then launched with its official logo that featured a crown on top of a crest. And the crest had four divisions, with two divisions featuring swans. An ornate circle framing adorned the crest and the crown. One of the many interpretations for the first logo says that the inspiration for the crest was taken from the Detroit founder’s “coat of arms.” Also, below the crest “La Mothe Cadillac” was placed within the ornate circle frame.
Besides, the trademark of the Cadillac logo was registered officially in the year 1906.
As mentioned, the Cadillac logos over the years has changed about 30 times, we will be discussing a few of them that had major changes in the design.
1905 – 1914
A few sources say that the second Cadillac logo was introduced in 1905, while others say it was redesigned in 1906. The first logo completely inspired the new design, but the crest was now in a circle shape adorned with some floral pattern outside and enclosed within an ornate circle frame. The crown was still above the crest but was reshaped to fit the crest’s top. A few of the elements were also filled with black colour. This Cadillac car logo was used by the company till 1908.
In 1908, the crest was reshaped to its original design, still featuring black coloured swans. The crest was enclosed with a more clear and clean-lined circle with Cadillac written in all caps on top of the crown. A tagline was added right below the crest but within the circle, i.e. “Standard of the World” in all caps. This logo remained with the company for six years until 1914 when the company launched a completely new Cadillac logo design.

The Cadillac car logo in 1914 replaced the crest, the crown and the circles introduced in the previous versions. The wordmark Cadillac appeared in the logo using a special font and was underlined. A black oval-shaped frame was also added behind it. This logo, however, remained with the brand for a year only.
1915-1925
The Cadillac car logo launched in the year 1915 featured elements from the logos of 1902 and 1908. The floral wreath around the crest and the crown were from the 1902 Cadillac logo, whereas the crest, crown and clear line circle were taken from the 1908 edition. Besides, leaves were added on the left and right of the circle. This logo represented the brand for around five years.
In 1920, the Cadillac logo once again adapted the 1908 version accompanied by the floral wreath around the crest and crown within the clear line circle. The crown was, however, attached to the crest with singular lines. This logo represented Cadillac for five years.
From 1925 to 1933, multiple versions of the Cadillac car logo were introduced to represent the brand’s identity and direction.
1933 – 1939
Another major change in the Cadillac logo history was witnessed in the year 1933. Cadillac got a more modern version to represent its brand’s identity with a logo featuring angular wings on two sides of the crest, which appeared more dark in shade and the seven pommels from the crown were placed on the top of the crest. These pommels represented the crown. The addition of wings in the logo was inspired by the rapid growth of American aviation in that time.
1939-1947
The year 1939 brought a different version of the Cadillac logo. The wings were replaced by a rigid triangle shape with the crest inside but placed on the upper area. The crown was featured at the top of the crest outside the triangle. The triangle was narrow, featuring an elongated peak pointing downwards. Also, the triangle had a monochrome pattern. This logo was used by the company for three years and was replaced by another completely new logo design in 1942.

The Cadillac logo in the year 1942 got another shape in which the wings were directed up. These metallic wings were very much similar to the royal armours. The crest and crown were featured in between the wings. A shield was placed below the crest. The addition of the shield actually represented comfort and safety offered by Cadillac to its vehicle owners.
1948-1963

Another modern version of the Cadillac logo was introduced in 1948. The crest with the crown continued to be the main symbol in the logo and was placed above a wide-opened shape similar to the letter ‘V’ at a minimum distance.

The logo was slightly changed with no significant changes in the design and elements. The logo in 1957 was a stretched or you can say a broader version of the Cadillac car logo, introduced in 1948. This logo remained the brand’s identity for six years.
1963-2000
The Cadillac logo launched in the year 1963 gained popularity among many of its previous versions. One of the interesting facts about Cadillac is that this logo has represented the brand for more than 30 years. The crest with crown on top was surrounded by a silver wreath, and for the coat of arms, the colours used were blue, yellow and fuchsia (some sources say ‘red’ instead) with details painted in white and black. Also, the wreath was holding the crest from the centre. This Cadillac car logo was good enough to represent the brand for such a long period.
2000-2014
In 2000, Cadillac car logo was again given a contemporary and sleek design that remained with the brand for fourteen years. The outlines of the crest were sleek and clear, complemented with a metallic sheen. The swans and crown disappeared, but the metallic wreath still surrounded the crest.
2014 – Present

The Cadillac logo was upgraded in the year 2014 and is used till date. Except the crest, all the other elements from the logo were removed. The colors in the crest were more enhanced as well as its overall design. The crest is stretched, refined and sharp featuring smooth lines. Also, the logo is used with and without cursive wordmark “Cadillac.” The crest is similar to a mosaic that represents the Cadillac’s rich history.
The same Cadillac logo is used for branding and on marketing collaterals, and it also appears on the official website. This version is in black and white without a wordmark.
CADILLAC LOGO MEANING
Similar to other iconic car logos, there are more than one interpretations about the meaning of the Cadillac logo. The logo’s crest is said to be an inspiration from the Le Sieur Antoine De La Mothe Cadillac’s coat of arms. He was the founder of Detroit city. The idea behind adding the crest to the logo was to manufacture automobiles with the courage, zest and zeal that the Detroit founder had. The name Cadillac is also taken from the family of Detroit’s founder.
Besides, it is said that the addition of crest and wreath was to show association with excellence, royalty and attention to detail.
