Mini, a production of British Motor Corporation (BMC), gained popularity among car enthusiasts for being a fuel-efficient car introduced in 1959. Also, the car offered an ultimate driving experience even with a small engine. Mini was designed by Alec Issigonis for BMC and featured a miniature style that was available in different colour schemes. All these unique factors contributed to the success and fame of Mini cars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MINI CAR HISTORY AND FACTS <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Starting from historical facts about Mini, It was first launched by BMC, later renamed British Leyland 1968. In 1994, Rover Group was acquired by BMW and then Mini was manufactured under its name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mini was a 2-door car that featured a 4-speed gearbox backed by an 848 cc transverse engine. The Mini was initially marketed as Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor, under the Austin Motor Company and Morris Motors names. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BMW retained its rights to the Mini name and sold its many shares to Rover Group in 2000. BMW reserved its right on the title to produce cars, labelled Mini and created a separate Mini division. This division\u2019s sole purpose was to revamp the existing Mini and launch a modern design according to the new era. Hence, since 2000, BMW has been producing Mini vehicles with distinctive features. Moreover, Mini models produced before 2000 are referred to as \u201cClassic Mini\u201d to differentiate them from the new Minis.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the interesting facts about Mini is that more than 5 million Classic Mini units have been sold around the world, since its launch in the year 1959. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A TINY CAR TO ACCOMMODATE PASSENGERS AND LUGGAGE <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

BMC wanted to manufacture a fuel-effiicent car that could easily accommodate four passengers and their luggage. Therefore, given the car was only 120.02 inches long, BMC added a transverse engine and a wheel-in-each-corner design, backed by front-wheel drive.  Hence, Mini came out as a 4-seater, 2 door, and fuel-efficient car in the market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SEVEN POWERFUL ENGINES IN ONE MINI <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another Mini car fact is that it was equipped with seven sizes of A Series engine over the time of its production. These seven engine sizes were 848cc, 970cc, 997cc, 998cc, 1071cc, 1098cc and 1275cc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AFFORDABLE AND FASTEST CARS IN THE EARLY 60s <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The initial prototypes of Mini were tested by installing a 946cc engine that could yield 27 hp. BMC assumed that the car would be too powerful and not all motorists could handle it. Therefore, the 946 cc engine was replaced by an 848 cc that could yield 33 hp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first Mini MK1 launched with an 848 cc engine would take 26.5 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph and had a top speed of 75 mph only. This is though very low as compared to today\u2019s standard, yet Mini in the early 60s with an 848 cc engine was considered the fastest and most affordable, fuel-efficient car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Classic Mini had many variants that could cater to the needs of different customers. The Mni body styles included luxurious, long boot saloons, particularly known as Wesley Hornet. Mini Van and Mini pick-up were designed to cater to businesses that need to take goods from one place to another. Rest of the variants were saloons referred to as Cooper, long nose saloons known as Clubman, 1275 GT, superheated saloons known as ERA Turbo, Traveller, Countryman and jeep-like buggies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jeep-like buggies were Mini-based utility vehicles designed for the British army and called Moke. However, Mini Moke did not make it to the military base. One of the possibly unknown facts about Mini is that Mini Moke gained popularity as a recreational and utility vehicle, and around 50,000 Mokes were manufactured for four years, from 1964 to 1968. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MINI DID NOT FEATURE A RADIO IN THE EARLY YEARS <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the Mini facts you might not know is that the initial Classic Mini models never featured a radio. Instead, Issigonis installed a big ashtray. However, later Mini models featured radios. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CLASSIC MINI TOOK SEVERAL HOURS TO ASSEMBLE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Each Mini model used to take around 30 hours to assemble. There were 3,016 screws approximately, including several nuts and bolts in the Classic Mini designed by Issigonis. This is definitely one of the interesting Mini car facts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

20<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> CENTURY\u2019S MOST INFLUENTIAL CAR<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Being voted as the second most influential car of the 20th<\/sup> century is one of the fun facts about Mini. In 1999, Mini was voted ahead of the Volkswagen Beetle and Citroen DS, right behind the Ford Model T. This standing was indeed an achievement for Mini. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BMC thus introduced Morris Mini Cooper and Austin Mini Cooper in the early 60s. Later, Mini circuit racing cars debuted known as the Cooper and Mini Cooper Sport, featuring 970 cc and 1,275 cc engines. These models by Cooper were also available to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, the Mini car participated in and won the European Rally Championship, British Saloon Car Championship, the Monte Carlo Rally, the British Rally Championship and the European Touring Car Championship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE DESIGN OF MINI CARS REMAINED UNCHANGED FOR FOUR DECADES <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the Mini facts is that no major changes were made to the Mini\u2019s base and design for more than 40 years. Only a few minor cosmetic changes were made in the four decades, and the powertrains were upgraded. Issigonis believed that if nothing is broken, there is no need to fix it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
