The BMW iX Flow with E Ink is the world’s first car with the ability to alter the colour of its exterior at the touch of a button. The BMW iX Flow is a concept car<\/a> that can change colour from black to white and from white to black. The E Ink technology used for this has been developed by a Taiwan-based company named E Ink Holdings Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How BMW E Ink Colour Changing Technology Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are countless microcapsules in iX Flow\u2019s body wrap which contain negatively charged white and positively charged black pigments. The car\u2019s exterior has three layers with the middle layer consisting of transparent capsules and the top and bottom layers having electrodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the driver clicks the button to change the colour, an electrical field is generated causing the desired colour to appear to the surface. The electrophoretic colour changing technology in BMW iX Flow Magic E Ink is similar to the one found in Kindle (e-reader) which allows the reader to choose the theme backgrounds of different colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of energy consumption, this is highly energy efficient because switching the car\u2019s colour consumes very little electricity and no electricity is required for the car to remain in the colour you have chosen. Although the colour variants are now limited at the moment, BMW stated that new colours will be added every year and drivers will be able to pick from a wider colour range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is worth mentioning that this will not be available for purchase in dealerships anywhere in the foreseeable future since it is a research project that is being currently worked upon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For both the cases, the amount of energy used by the vehicle’s electrical system will be reduced which will thus make the car\u2019s battery last longer on a single recharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
