All about Tesla’s Autopark Feature
A lot of drivers dread hitting a curb and find parking their car perfectly to be a daunting challenge. To make the task of parking easier and convenient, many automotive manufacturers have integrated parking-assist technologies. For example, some of the models of Tesla offer an Autopark feature – a system that lets the car park itself.
In this guide, we will discuss the following points related to Tesla’s Autopark feature:
- What is Tesla’s Autopark feature
- How Tesla’s Autopark feature works
- Tesla models equipped with Tesla’s Autopark feature
What is Tesla Autopark
In its mission to steer towards fully-autonomous driving, Tesla Motors are expanding the raft of features available in Autopilot – an umbrella term for Tesla’s automated driving features. The Autopark feature falls into the same category.
The Tesla Autopark feature, as its name implies, is designed to perpendicular and parallel park the car safely without any driver intervention. The system uses a set of ultrasonic sensors, global positioning system and cameras to scan the parking space and then navigate your car to the parking spot.
How Tesla Autopark Feature Works
To make it easier to understand how Tesla Autopark feature works, we will first take a look at activating the feature followed by explaining how to disengage Tesla Autopark.
Activating Tesla Autopark
To activate the Autopark feature in your Tesla, proceed with the following steps:
- Reduce your driving speed to less than 21 km/h and 13 km/h for parallel and perpendicular parking, and keep an eye on the car’s centre display. When the Autopark identifies a parking spot, you will be able to see a parking icon on your car’s touchscreen. If you feel that you can park your car in a particular spot but are unable to see the parking icon, this means that the conditions of that place are not suitable for Autopark’s functionality and you will have to either park manually or choose another parking spot.
- Shift your car into reverse.
- Tap on the “Start Autopark” option and put your hands off of the steering wheel, The car will now park itself.
Disengaging Tesla Autopark
To disengage the Autopark feature, you can tap the Cancel option available on the touchscreen. In addition, doing any of the following can also cause the Autopark feature to disengage:
- Driver manually steering the car
- Driver leaving the car.
- Opening any of the car’s doors
- Pressing the brake or accelerator pedal.
Pitfalls of Using Tesla Autopark
One of the biggest limitations of Tesla Autopark is that it is not operational under all circumstances thereby requiring the driver to intervene when needed. Let’s take a look at some of the examples of situations where Tesla Autopark feature would not function:
- Autopark technology only detects curbs made up of stone and works on smooth roads. It will not park your car on an inclined or declined road.
- Bad visibility conditions because of heavy rain or snow affect the effectiveness of the Autopark feature which is why it is recommended that you make sure that all cameras and sensors are clean.
- The driving speed must be less than 21 km/h and 13 km/h for parallel and perpendicular parking respectively. In case of speed exceeding the limit, Autopark would not be unable to carry out its operations properly.
- The feature may not be able to operate properly if the parking spot is extremely close to a wall or pillar.
- Textured road surfaces
- Autopark is unable to detect whether a parking spot is legal or illegal. You should be careful of this as parking in an illegal spot can result in a fine.
