What Is a Seized Engine and How To Fix It
Your car engine can seize due to several reasons for instance lack of lubrication and locked crankshaft. However, the blockage in the crankshaft can be caused when a piston gets stuck in the cylinder or the malfunctioning of the piston rod bearing. Whatever the case is, a seized car engine can be frustrating and you need to know how to fix it. Here is a comprehensive guide to explain to you what to do when your car engine is seized and how to fix it.
Why Is My Car Engine Seized?
The seizure of the engine is mainly caused due to the delay in changing engine oil and the lack of lubrication. The lack of lubrication is generated because of the friction of the engine’s metal parts and the high temperatures. If the oil level is not adequate or if any of the components of the cooling system fail, overheating will occur, which will eventually wear out and affect the main components of the engine.
How to Fix a Seized Car Engine
Engine seizing, as we have already mentioned before, can affect various elements of the engine, such as the piston or cylinders, the crankshaft piston, the bearings, the camshaft or the cylinder head. Here is a detailed procedure for repairing a seized car engine.
Tool Required to Fix the Seized Car Engine
- Breaker bar
- Socket set
- Combination wrench set
- Screwdrivers
The Process To Fix the Car’s Seized Engine
The seized engine can only be repaired if the damage is not severe; otherwise, you have to replace the engine. However, if your car’s engine is seized due to rust then you can follow the below-mentioned steps to repair it.
Unplug All the Fittings
To repair the engine in any of the cases, we will have to remove all the belt-driven accessories along with the underhood components. For instance, power steering, car water pump and alternator should be removed from the vehicle when the engine is cold. Also, remove all the coolant that it may contain and disconnect the exhaust.
Ensure Pressure Is Equalised Through the Engine
Use a socket to remove the spark plugs. Also, don’t forget to mark numbers on all the wires so that you won’t get confused while reconnecting them. As you remove the piston, they may release the pressure within the engine; however, you can relieve the pressure by removing the plugs.
Remove the Valve Cover
- Now remove all the restraining nuts from the valve cover.
- Once you remove the cover, the rocker arms will be visible to you.
- Now it’s time to remove the rocker arms and take the exposed rod from the cylinder head.
Rotate Crankshaft
- Find out the front of the engine block and find out the bold head in the middle of a pulley-driven belt or a harmonic balancer.
- Attach a socket in the bolt head by using a long-handled breaking bar.
- Now you can free the engine by rotating the attached bolt head clockwise.
- If you find difficulty in turning the engine, apply penetrating oil to the wall of each cylinder.
Let the oil sit for a couple of hours and try moving the bolt head again. - This process may require several attempts, so be ready with that.
Reassemble
Once the engine is free and lubricated completely, reassemble all the components carefully. Also, recharge the battery and start the engine again.
It is also essential that after repairing the seized engine, all the parts are reassembled correctly without leaving any gaps. The gaps can cause friction and irregular wear in any of the engine components.
Is It Always Necessary To Change the Head Gasket?
It is advisable to always change the head gasket when repairing a seized engine because it tends to lose the original compression when opening the engine. If it is not changed, there would be a risk of seizing up the engine again.
How Much It Costs To Fix a Seized Engine
As in any other repair, the cost of fixing a seized engine will depend on the type of vehicle, its characteristics and the extent of the damage caused by the breakdown. However, replacing a complete engine can really be costly if you are replacing it with a new one. You can buy used engines and parts in the UAE at economical rates.
The cost of a used car engine starts from AED 2500 in the UAE. The price of the engine is based on its life, usage and how many kilometres you drive a vehicle. Moreover, the labour cost of changing the engine starts from AED 4,000.
With this, we conclude our step by step guide on how to fix a seized car engine. However, if your engine is irreparable then consider buying used cars for sale in the UAE at market competitive rates. Also, make sure you keep your car’s engine lubricated and follow the car maintenance schedules to avoid any such situation.
