AI-Powered Precision: RTA’s Innovative Approach to Delivery Bike Rider Performance Management
During GITEX 2023, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai introduced an advanced technology powered by artificial intelligence to effectively monitor and evaluate the performance of delivery bike riders operating within the city.
RTA showcases AI for Performance Of Delivery Riders at Gitex 2023
The strategic initiative by RTA aims to enhance the safety of both delivery bike riders and other road users in Dubai, aligning with the authority’s broader plan to integrate artificial intelligence solutions into its operations.
In collaboration with the private sector, RTA launched an innovative initiative utilising cutting-edge technology to track potential violations by delivery bike riders. The initiative is among the future mobility initiatives at GITEX 2023. It involves deploying a specialised vehicle equipped with AI-driven cameras.
Implemented in the second quarter of 2023, RTA’s field teams conducted inspections on 608 delivery bikes, uncovering 63 instances of violations. These infractions included non-compliance with the unified uniform, absence of side stickers, lack of phosphorescent stickers, unauthorised parking in prohibited zones, carrying a passenger behind the driver and damage to the delivery bike’s trunk.
The introduction of AI-assisted operations proved highly successful for RTA, resulting in significant achievements. Inspection time was reduced from 7.5 minutes to just 1 minute and daily inspections using the AI-equipped vehicle and smart cameras increased fivefold.
This was made possible by deploying the vehicle on various streets across the emirate and utilising a heat map to detect assembly points of riders, categorising the danger levels of these areas based on reported cases.

AI-powered tracking for bikes can monitor and analyse rider behaviour, promoting adherence to safety regulations. It can identify potential violations, such as unauthorised parking, ensuring compliance with traffic rules and regulations. Apart from bikes, artificial intelligence in cars also enhances safety and convenience.
Improved Performance Monitoring
AI enables real-time tracking of delivery bike riders’ performance, allowing for quick identification of inefficiencies and areas for improvement. Moreover, metrics such as delivery times, routes taken and adherence to schedules can be analysed to enhance overall performance.
Quick Response to Violations
AI systems can swiftly detect and report violations, enabling timely intervention and corrective actions. This proactive approach helps prevent repeated offences and ensures a prompt resolution of issues.
Optimised Routing and Delivery Processes
AI algorithms can analyse historical data to optimise delivery routes, reducing delivery times and fuel consumption. Improved routing contributes to more efficient operations, cost savings and a positive impact on the environment.
Cost Savings
AI-driven efficiency can lead to cost savings in terms of fuel, maintenance and labour. Streamlined operations, reduced delivery times and optimised resource allocation contribute to overall financial benefits.
Data-Driven Decision Making
AI generates valuable insights from data collected during tracking, enabling data-driven decision-making for route planning, resource allocation and performance improvements.
Increased Accountability
AI tracking systems create a transparent record of a rider’s activities, fostering accountability among delivery personnel. Accurate tracking can help resolve disputes, validate deliveries and ensure that riders adhere to company policies.
Time Efficiency
Automation of tracking processes through AI reduces the time and effort required for manual monitoring. Quick and accurate data analysis allows for more timely decision-making and intervention when needed.
Scalability
AI tracking systems can easily scale to accommodate the growing demands of a delivery business, providing a flexible solution that adapts to changing requirements.
Customer Satisfaction
Improved delivery times, accurate tracking information and enhanced overall efficiency contribute to a better customer experience, ultimately increasing satisfaction and loyalty.
