Iconic Motorbikes of the Past Years

1. Hildebrand & Wolfmüller
The world’s first motorbike was developed in 1895 by Hildebrand & Wolfmüller. This pioneering motorbike was the first-ever petrol-powered vehicle on two wheels. Later on, the motorbike inspired many manufacturers to develop some of the most iconic motorbikes of all time.
Alois Wolfmüller and the Hildebrand brothers Heinrich and Wilhelm, made the first motorcycle. Today, they are remembered as the ‘fathers of the motorcycle’.
Some may say that Daimler Reitwagen was the first motorcycle (launched in 1885), however, that motorbike was supported by two stabiliser wheels, on the other hand, the pioneering motorbike made by Hildebrand & Wolfmüller was on two wheels only, thus making it the world’s first production motorcycle by definition.
2. 1936 Harley-Davidson EL
When we talk about pioneering motorbikes, the 1936 Harley-Davidson EL cannot be missed. Launched in 1936, the bike changed the face of heavyweight motorcycles, establishing a design template for big or heavy motorcycles. At a time when café racers were preferred by bikers, this knucklehead monster was a breath of fresh air for motorbike enthusiasts.
Those in search of power, comfort and performance immediately accepted the Harley Davidson. The EL introduced unique features including a horseshoe oil tank, a teardrop fuel tank, and dual filler caps. All these features are still trademarks of the Harley Davidson brand.

3. Ducati PS1000LE
Designed somewhere in the ’70s, the look of the Ducati PS1000LE was bold and futuristic, keep in mind that this was way before the technology that you see today. From the bubble-shield front structure to its aerodynamics, this was one of the sleekest and fastest bikes of its time.
4. Honda CB750 Four 1969
In 1969 a Japanese company launched the CB750 Four to break the monopoly American and British companies had over twin-cylinder motorcycles. Honda was a new player in the motorcycle industry, but it could win customers owing to its powerful, yet comfortable, four-cylinder engine with overhead cams.
Before the CB750 was launched by Honda, motorcycles were either speedy or comfortable, however, it was Honda that was able to offer both these qualities. The CB750 was known to be a classic Japanese motorcycle of that era.
5. 1975 Honda GL1000 Gold Wing
Launched in 1975, Honda GL1000 Gold Wing is among the few motorbikes that were ahead of their time. The motorbike indicated new performance and reliability features and dominated the industry for a while. So much so that even to this day, the GL1000 Gold Wing sets a benchmark for power and speed, without compromising on motorbike ride comfort and reliability.
The GoldWing was powered by a 1,000CC liquid-cooled flat-four engine that was famous for being a long-distance cruiser.
6. Kawasaki Ninja ZX900 1984
ZX900 launched in 1984 was the first Ninja bike launched by Kawasaki. Of all the pioneering motorbikes of the Ninja series, this was the first two-wheeler. The motorbike had a 113-horsepower engine on a lightweight chassis, a top speed of 145 mph – which was the fastest speed for any production motorbike at the time.
Apart from speed characteristics, the Ninja was famous for its plastic outer shell, which was designed to add visual appeal and save weight. Today, the world knows all about the various bikes in the Japanese manufacturer’s Ninja Series, but the ZX900 was its first-ever production bike. 7. 1998 Yamaha YZ400F
Launched in 1998, Yamaha YZ400F earned fame among dirt bike fans. This was the first dirt bike with a 4-stroke engine. Naturally, this meant more power and performance and features making the bike feasible for daily routine usage.
Yamaha YZ400 had more road performance, thanks to its four-cylinder engine which meant high engine compression and lightweight build.
8. Suzuki Katana 1981
BMW’s ex-styling chief, Hans Muth, designed the Suzuki Katana. This is an iconic motorcycle that is still remembered by bikers throughout the world. Unique features of Suzuki Katana included a raised riding seat position, a tank shaped in a wedge and an entire back seat and creases. All these features made Katana a bike that was way ahead of its time in 1981.
9. 1981 BMW R 80 G/S
BMW came up with the BMW R 80 G/S in 1981. The European manufacturer’s bike was the world’s first ‘adventure’ motorbike, uniting elements of touring and off-road bikes in a two-wheel ride.
The R 80 G/S was fast enough for motorways and rugged enough for desert tracks and dirt trails. In terms of capability, the bike was really ahead of its time in the ’80s.
10. Yamaha Y125 Moegi Urban Commuter
When we think of pioneering motorcycles of the past, Y125 Moegi Urban Commuter is among the top contenders. Yamaha came up with a concept bike, the Yamaha Y125 Moegi Urban Commuter. Running on a single-cylinder weighing just 176 pounds, this bike was designed for the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show.
