Off-road driving in the UAE demands vehicles equipped with advanced features to handle its challenging terrains. The right technology and specifications ensure safety, performance and reliability from steep desert dunes to rocky mountain trails. Modern off-road vehicles now have specialised systems for sand, heat and rough landscapes. Understanding these must-have features in off-road vehicles helps drivers choose rides that perform well in demanding environments.
Important Features in Off-Road Vehicles
Modern off-road vehicles incorporate advanced systems designed to address the challenges of varying terrain conditions. These technologies provide better control, improved responsiveness and increased operational confidence when navigating Dubai’s demanding landscapes.
Terrain Management System with ‘Sand Mode’
Many car manufacturers, such as Land Rover and Jeep, offer a dedicated Sand Mode within their Terrain Management Systems, similar to the ‘Sand/Mud’ setting in Jeep’s Selec-Terrain.
This mode calibrates throttle response, traction control and gearbox mapping to deliver optimal performance on soft, loose sand, reducing the likelihood of wheel spin or bogging. It enables the vehicle to maintain consistent momentum across challenging desert landscapes, ensuring smoother and safer dune driving.
Adaptive Air Suspension with ‘Extract Mode’
Vehicles like the GMC Hummer EV feature Adaptive Air Suspension and an Extract Mode, which lifts the chassis by approximately six inches to increase approach, departure and breakover angles.
This capability is critical for traversing steep sand slopes and navigating rocky terrains around Dubai, combining ground clearance flexibility with smooth on-road dynamics.
CrabWalk & KickTurn (Multi-Wheel Steering/Spin-Turn Capability)
The GMC Hummer EV offers CrabWalk, which enables diagonal movement via four-wheel steering and enhances manoeuvrability in tight terrain. The Rivian R1T and R1S introduce Kick Turn, a modern twist on the ‘Tank Turn,’ allowing controlled spins on loose surfaces up to 20 km/h, ideal for quick directional adjustments in sand or narrow tracks. These features significantly reduce the need for complex reversing manoeuvres in confined or unpredictable environments.
UltraVision Underbody Cameras
Also found in the Hummer EV, UltraVision Underbody Cameras provide visibility beneath the chassis, revealing tricky obstacles like rocks or dune ruts. This feature helps Dubai drivers prevent under-chassis damage and increases awareness when tackling steep dunes or rocky trails. It enhances situational awareness, particularly when navigating steep inclines or challenging off-road conditions.
Individual Wheel Drive with Tank-Turn (Yangwang U8)
The BYD Yangwang U8 for sale in the UAE features the Individual Wheel Drive (IWD) platform, with four independent 220-240 kW electric motors, one per wheel, enabling instantaneous torque vectoring and differential steering.
This system allows the vehicle to spin up to 360° on its axis, a true tank turn, by rotating each side’s wheels in opposite directions. Moreover, it reacts 100 times faster than conventional AWD systems and can compensate for a tire blowout at speeds up to 120 km/h, maintaining stability through rapid torque redistribution.
Trail Control / Off-Road Cruise Control
Trail Control is one of the key features for 4×4 vehicles. It is available on models like the Ford Bronco and F-150 Raptor and acts as cruise control for rugged terrain. Drivers can set a low speed, typically between 1 and 45 km/h and the system automatically manages throttle and braking, letting the driver focus solely on steering. It maintains steady momentum over uneven ground, whether climbing, descending or traversing soft sand and is calibrated to disengage at higher speeds or when manual input is needed.
FAQs
What does ‘Sand Mode’ in a Terrain Management System do?
It fine-tunes throttle, traction and gearbox mapping to maintain traction and momentum in soft sand.
What advantage does CrabWalk offer in Dubai desert driving?
It enables diagonal movement to navigate tight inclines or reposition the vehicle without full turns.
How does Kick Turn differ from Tank Turn?
Kick Turn allows controlled spins on loose surfaces at moderate speed, aiding quick directional changes without damaging tires or terrain.
Do electric off-road vehicles suit desert use?
Yes, many electric cars for sale in the UAE offer instant torque, advanced drive modes and rugged features like air suspension and underbody cameras.
That was the list of must-have off-road vehicle features. Advanced off-road technologies transform desert driving into a safer and more controlled experience. Features like Sand Mode, Extract Mode, CrabWalk, UltraVision cameras, IWD systems and Trail Control give drivers precision and confidence. Together, they ensure modern off-road vehicles can tackle Dubai’s toughest terrains with unmatched efficiency and reliability.
