The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), an affiliate body of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has taken a milestone initiative. The authority has formally recognised modular smart vehicles in Abu Dhabi as a new and independent road vehicle category. The announcement was made during DRIFTx 2025, part of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week.
What is a Modular Smart Vehicle?
A connected vehicle that serves as a reconfigurable transport unit that can link or detach from other units based on passenger demand or operational needs. These vehicles use advanced sensors, automation and AI to optimise capacity, reduce congestion and improve overall transport efficiency. They are designed to operate either autonomously or under remote supervision, depending on the deployment stage.
A New Category of Road Vehicles
Abu Dhabi is the first city worldwide to classify modular, smart and reconfigurable vehicles as a standalone road category. Developed by NexT, these autonomous modular vehicles in Abu Dhabi can adapt in real time to cater to changing passenger volumes and service requirements.
The decision is supported by international research and peer-reviewed studies from institutions in New York and Abu Dhabi. Collectively, the findings show measurable benefits in traffic congestion reduction, optimisation, energy efficiency and lower emissions.
Pilot Deployment on Yas Island: A New Chapter in Abu Dhabi Mobility Innovation
ITC, in collaboration with Emirates Driving Company, Liftango and the Paradigma Innovation Hub, is preparing the world’s first pilot deployment of these multi-unit vehicles on Yas Island. This pilot project is envisioned to evaluate operational performance, safety protocols and system readiness of the modular vehicles for wider integration within Abu Dhabi smart mobility networks.
The project aligns with the emirate’s long-term plans to expand autonomous transport solutions and intelligent mobility ecosystems.
