Dubai Metro Gold Line Announced
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, approved the Dubai Metro Gold Line as a flagship addition to the emirate’s transport network. The project represents a major investment of AED 34 billion and reflects Dubai’s continued focus on infrastructure-led growth.
Spanning 42 kilometres, the Dubai Metro Gold Line will include 18 stations and stands out as Dubai’s first fully underground metro line. Designed to connect key districts and economic hubs, the project is also welcomed by major real estate stakeholders for its potential to support long-term growth and stability.
“Areas linked to major infrastructure like the Metro don’t just become more convenient, they become more resilient, attracting a broader end-user base and sustaining interest across market cycles.” – Abdullah Alajaji, founder & Managing Director of Driven Properties
The approval took place in the presence of senior leadership, highlighting the strategic importance of the initiative. This milestone underscores Dubai’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure that enhances the quality of life and strengthens global competitiveness.
Highlights of the Dubai Metro Gold Line
The new metro line in Dubai is a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade that will reshape connectivity across the emirate. Key highlights of the project include:
FULLY UNDERGROUND NETWORK
One of the defining features of the Dubai Metro Gold Line is its fully underground design. Extending 42 kilometres beneath the city at a depth of 40 metres, the line will utilise advanced tunnel boring technology.
This approach ensures minimal disruption to existing developments and daily life while maintaining high standards of safety and engineering excellence. The underground design also enhances efficiency and reliability across the network.
EXTENSIVE CONNECTIVITY
The Gold Line will connect with existing metro lines and national rail systems. It will link with the Red Line at Business Bay and Jumeirah Golf Estates and with the Green Line at Al Ghubaiba.
Additionally, integration with Etihad Rail at Meydan and Jumeirah Golf Estates will strengthen connectivity beyond Dubai, linking the emirate to the wider UAE rail network. This multimodal integration will significantly improve travel convenience.
STRATEGIC ROUTE COVERAGE
The route spans 15 strategic locations, forming a vital urban corridor across Dubai. Key areas covered include Al Ghubaiba, Mina Rashid, City Walk, Business Bay, Mohammed Bin Rashid City, Nad Al Sheba, Meydan, Al Barsha South, Jumeirah Village Circle and Jumeirah Golf Estates.
By connecting historic districts with emerging developments, the RTA Dubai Metro Gold Line will enhance urban integration and support balanced city growth.
Network Expansion and Capacity
The Dubai Metro Gold Line will play a major role in expanding the overall metro network. Once completed, the total network length will increase from 120 kilometres to 162 kilometres, marking a 35% expansion.
Similarly, the number of stations will grow from 67 to 85, further improving accessibility across the emirate. The new line is expected to serve over 1.5 million people by 2040, with daily ridership projected to reach 465,000 passengers beyond that period.
This expansion will strengthen the metro’s position as the backbone of public transport in Dubai, catering to both residents and visitors.
Enhancing Mobility and Reducing Congestion
The Dubai Metro Gold Line is designed to ease congestion across key transport corridors. It is expected to reduce congestion on the Red Line between Burjuman and ONPASSIVE stations by 23%.
Moreover, the project will cut more than 40 million journeys annually from roads, improving traffic flow across the emirate. The introduction of route loops will further enhance connectivity, making travel more efficient for both short and long distances.
Dubai Metro Gold Line completion date
The project follows a structured development timeline to ensure efficient delivery. Tender issuance is scheduled for 2026, followed by contract awards in 2027. Construction will then commence, leading to the project’s inauguration on 9th September 2032.
