Ways to Stop Excessive Condensation Inside Cars
Condensation inside cars occurs when the temperature outside is different from that inside. This usually happens in the winters. For instance, if the car is heated inside and the warm air meets the cold windscreen condensation will happen. Case in point: when the warm air in the car meets the cold air outside, it turns the water vapour into actual water. This is why the car’s windscreen or windows usually get foggy.
Car windows or windscreens also tend to get foggy if it rains continuously while you are driving.
Not only does condensation inside a car make it difficult to drive, it also makes it dangerous for the safety of the driver and passengers.
What Adds More to Condensation Inside Car
Apart from the weather, anything damp inside the car can contribute to the condensation inside car windows and windshields. Some items in your car that increase the dampness level include umbrellas, coats, dog blankets. Remove such items when not driving to reduce condensation inside parked cars.
Moreover, remove all kinds of trash from your car. To keep your car clean remove unused cups, empty bottles and drink cans. Overtime water from these containers can evaporate and contribute more towards condensation. Leaks in various parts of the cars also form condensation in your car. Leaking doors or sunroofs allow rainwater in the car making it damp. Lastly, no circulation of fresh air also causes car condensation.
Tips for Driving Safely When There is Condensation Inside Car
Condensation inside a car can be a serious issue as reduced visibility makes the driver and the vehicle prone to driving hazards. It can happen in any part of the world and UAE is no exception. Follow these tips to drive safely with condensation inside the car.
Turn on the Fog Lights
Car lights are important in the UAE and world over for safety. Most modern cars come standard with fog lights. If your car is equipped with a rear fog light, turn them on until the windscreen and windows are clear of fog. That said, turn them off when the fog problem is sorted or it may dazzle other cars on the road. Driving in foggy weather without lights leads to a fine of AED 500 and 4 black points.
Stop at a Service Station
If your window or windscreen catches fog because of the weather while you’re on the go, it’s best to stop at the service station and wait for the fog to clear out.
Slow Your Vehicle
Driving on a road when there is fog at a speed of 120 kmph is dangerous and not very responsible. Slow your vehicle to a speed limit of not more than 50 kmph and drive in the inside lane. Moreover, if the fog is very thick, slow your vehicle down to 40 kmph.
Turn on The Headlights
Turn on the headlights when there is condensation inside a car. Don’t turn on the main beams as the flash on the road may be dangerous for oncoming cars.
Don’t Drive with The Hazard Lights On
Turning the hazard lights warns other cars on the road that your vehicle is stationary or it warns them of a road accident. Therefore, don’t turn the hazard lights on when there is condensation in the car. The car behind you may brake sharply thinking you’ve stopped your vehicle.
Turn on The Car Heater
The car windows and windscreens usually experience fog in the early winter morning in the UAE. To stop condensation on car windows and windscreens, make use of the vehicle climate control system and turn the heat to warm up the car.
Listen
Turn off the music, open your window a little and listen carefully, you may hear another car coming from a far that isn’t visible or hear some warning to stop. Because of the fog, you’ll already be driving at a low speed level so turning the windows down and hearing the wind won’t be much of a problem.
Keep Your Vehicle at a Distance
Fog or no fog, always keep a safe distance from other vehicles on the road. However, be extra cautious when it’s foggy. Case in point: the car in front might have to brake suddenly because of an unclear windshield resulting in an altercation.
Avoid Changing Lanes
When driving in bad weather conditions don’t change lanes on the road unless absolutely necessary. Drive in the inside right lane and don’t drive too fast. Follow the speed limits and try to stay in one lane.
