Abu Dhabi Airports, in cooperation with Masdar, has developed the UAE’s largest solar-powered car park at the Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). The step is in line with the government’s initiative to ensure sustainability, reduce carbon footprint in cars and promote clean energy usage in the country. The need of the Solar-powered car park project in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi’s largest solar-powered car park is the need of time to fulfil the UAE’s commitment and 2050 climate and energy goals. It is a system running on around 7500 solar panels – a 3-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) project. These solar panels are installed on the vehicle shading at the Midfield Terminal parking facility of the airport.
The purpose of this solar car park in Abu Dhabi is to conserve energy in an environmentally friendly and efficient manner. It is a grid-connected system that will provide energy for powering the parking area. Meanwhile, the surplus energy produced will be provided to other parts of the airport.
A Masdar Project
The energy department of Masdar is responsible for taking care of the various facets of the project including the design, construction, finances and procurement. The maintenance services of the system will also be taken care of by Masdar after every 25 years.

This Masdar-Abu Dhabi Airports solar project is likely to conserve around 530,0000 kg of carbon dioxide per year. It will be producing 3-megawatt of clean energy, which is more than sufficient for operating the parking areas.

As per the CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, Shareef Al Hashmi, the project has been developed using the latest technology that allows sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The idea was to create a greener, cleaner and ecologically friendly space.
He further added that the central ethos of the design and construction of the Midfield Terminal was based on net-zero development ideals. Sustainable and smart developmental choices were made to ensure a considerable reduction in the energy use of the building.

The project was another step towards the Emirate’s 2050 Energy Strategy, which aims to increase the clean energy share of the total energy in the country to 50%. The CEO of Masdar, Mohamed Jameel Al-Ramahi looks forward to advancing the clean energy goals further by developing similar programmes and projects for the development of sustainable energy practices.
